Your Guide to Sharp's Ridge

One of our very favorite things to do in Knoxville is the Sharp’s Ridge hike right off N. Broadway in North Knoxville. Being just 10 minutes from downtown and with plenty multi-use trails, it’s the perfect after-work spot to get some steps in (or spins – it’s a popular spot for mountain biking) without committing to an all-day excursion. You feel like you’re the ultimate outdoorsman, hiking in the middle of nowhere – despite the faint sounds of an ice cream truck below.

(Speaking of which, ice cream sounds like the perfect after-hike treat. You deserve it after this moderate and jaunt.)

How to Hike Sharp’s Ridge:

To experience Sharp’s Ridge trails, head to the Oakwood-Lincoln Park neighborhood. There are a few different spots to access the trails, but heading to Sharp’s Ridge Veterans Memorial Park will get you to the right area. There are a handful of trailheads which can be confusing, so here’s what we would do: Either grab some sustenance first and access the trail by the picnic area, or drive all the way to the end of the road and start at the upper parking area just past the cell tower. (Pro-Tip: that’s where you’ll find the most parking.) These two trailheads give you access to a shaded, not too terribly hilly jaunt across the ridge with a handful of pretty views. When you get to the other side, you can turn around and go back, or make it a “loop” by walking back on the side of the road.

Another Pro-Tip: We highly encourage doing this hike with a friend or two!

How to Not Hike Sharp’s Ridge:

Exercise aside, Sharp’s Ridge offers something even better: one of our absolute favorite views of downtown Knoxville. (By “exercise aside,” we mean you can drive your car right up to that sucker, no sweating required.)

There’s a platform near the top overlooking our Scruffy City’s skyline. It’s a different perspective from the middle-of-downtown-views like the Five Thirty Lounge or the Sunsphere. Instead, from farther away and higher up, you can see downtown Knoxville nestled in all cute and cozy, surrounded by the nature we all love. Feel free to stare while warm fuzzies overtake your heart or pull out the camera because trust us, this is such a great photo opp. Convenient signage even tells you exactly what you’re looking at.

See? So cute?

You see downtown Knoxville nestled all cute and cozy, surrounded by the nature we all love.

Bring a mountain bike, bring a doggo (on a leash), or just bring a friend and a little dash of adventure. Sharp’s Ridge is a local must-do!
