If going to the gym is not your thing, we get it. We really get it. Take it from me, Laura:

I was looking like a hot mess while running on the treadmill at the gym, and guess who steps on the treadmill by my side – a former pastor from my church. He’s also a professional athletic trainer and as you can imagine, he said, “Aww, you can go faster than that.” He then proceeded to turn up the speed on MY treadmill. I nodded agreeably, inwardly filing away a new reason to hate the gym – no privacy! Then, as the speed went way past my normal 5.8 mph, I lost my footing and TRIPPED. As if that wasn’t enough embarrassment, I fell to the side onto his treadmill making him fall as well. Thankfully no one was next to him or movie-worthy treadmill domino affect would have ensued. We laughed it off, but shame-induced tears also seemed like an appropriate response. I sulked over to the less dangerous ellipticals. 

All that to say, if going to the gym is not your thing we completely understand! This article is for you.

Now, don’t be fooled, there are some great gyms out there. The nostalgic vibe of the Downtown YMCA gets us every time. You can’t help but feel the classic sentiment of being part of something bigger than yourself when you’re there. We’re also big fans of the Old City Athletic Club – modern machines meets exposed brick is any millennial’s dream.

However, the gym is just not for everyone and, good news, it doesn’t have to be! Knoxville has so many opportunities to work out, find community, and not commit to a monthly payment. Check out this list to see all your fun options (and you’re welcome in advance – many of them involve beer!)


Mondays: 6:30 PM Fun Run at Alliance Brewing Co.

Tuesdays: 6:30 PM at Printshop with SlowKno Running Club

Wednesdays: 6:30 PM Crafty Grenade Race at Crafty Bastard (a “mysterious race like no other!”)

Thursdays: 6:00 PM at Central Flats & Taps with North Knox Beer Runners

Varying Nights: 6 PM Group Rides with Fountain City Pedaler
